OPeNDAP at American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2024

OPeNDAP had a big presence at this year’s American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2024 meeting, held in Washington DC. Over the course of the week, we hosted a shared booth with The HDF Group! We had over 200 people stop by our booth from all over the world, to catch up about the work that OPeNDAP and The HDF Group have been doing in the past years, and to meet the team behind these organizations.

Arika Virapongse presented this poster on behalf of her co-authors, James Gallagher and Miguel Jimenez-Urias. By being grouped in the Science & Society section of the poster hall, Arika was able to interact with other presenters and attendees who were also interested in developing ways to increase the benefits of science for broader society.

The poster shared about OPeNDAP’s approach to learn more about its users. OPeNDAP’s User Research program (initiated in 2023) seeks to fill a common gap in technology efforts: to understand better who the users of technology are and what their needs are. By sharing our approach, we hope to spark discussion among other science-related technology organizations around how we can do better to understand and serve our users.

We had over 200 AGU attendees stop by our booth, from all over the world, from diverse scientific backgrounds, and career stages. Many knew about OPeNDAP or HDF, and were delighted to meet and connect with the team behind the software! This year’s partnership with the HDF Group proved a valuable one, since in combination OPeNDAP and The HDF Group covered the entire spectrum of data production and access/publishing.
