Data systems are typically viewed as consisting of three major levels:

• Directory level - consists of broad descriptions of the contents of data sets; used to locate data sets of potential interest.
  
  
• Inventory level - consists of a detailed list of granuals (e.g., individual satellite passes) within a data set; used to find the data of interest.
  
  
• Data level - consists of the actual data objects.
